10 Fashion Trends for the Year 2018 in Kenya

Kenyans have always been known for their acute fashion sense and you can trust our people to always be updated on the latest fashion trends worldwide. If a new fashion trend gets released on a runway in Paris or New York tonight, you can be sure that someone will be wearing it somewhere in Nairobi before the week is out.

But we don’t just copy fashion trends- Kenyans always have a way of absorbing new fashion trends and adding a unique Kenyan twist that makes it our own. And since we are well into the New Year, there are some trends that have already shown that they are here to stay.

Many of them are trends that were already big last year but have shown signs of resilience and have continued to grow even bigger this year. There are also some new trends that are slowly but steadily taking root as well. Here is our pick of the top 10 fashion trends that are big in Kenya right now.

  1. Artistic Designs

Local artists seem to have found a way of working with fashion designers to infuse their work into the latest outfits and you will not miss to spot people on the streets donning outfits with custom arts on them. The best example here is the use of Kitenge in modern outfits.

Although Kitenge has been here for decades and is considered part of our culture, designers have found ways to add a modern look it. They started trending sometime last year when they were mostly worn by celebrities but the trend has trickled down to the streets.

  1. Footwear

Same as the last three years now, rubber shoes are still the most popular footwear for casual dressing, particularly among the young and middle aged in Nairobi. The designs of the rubber shoes have become bolder and brightly coloured arts on the shoes seem to be the most popular.

Mules are also becoming increasingly popular among working class women. These are special types of shoes that are closed at the front and open at the back and most women prefer them because of their versatility. They are available both as flats and as heels meaning that they can be worn to any occasion.

Vintage heels have also finally managed to make their way back to the headlines and they are not just being worn to the office but to parties and dinners as well. You can explore a huge selection of the latest footwear designs at Jade Collections by visiting our website or at any of our local outlets in the city.

  1. Athleisure

Athleisure is the new word in town this year and if you have not heard it before then you need to crawl out of that rock. It is a term that generally refers to outfits that can be worn for workouts as well as casually in order to pull off a sporty but casual look with a touch of style. They are mostly popular among the middle class who are becoming more aware of the need for physical fitness and have gym subscriptions or regular workout routines.

  1. Slim-Fit

Gone are the days when baggy pants, baggy T-shirts and heavy sweatshirts were cool- it’s time for the slim fit designs. Slim fit is a term that is generally used to refer to outfits that are designed to fit and hug a person’s profile, showing off the muscles and curves in the right places. Whether it is a trouser, a shirt or a sweater, getting a slim-fit design can help you pull off an athletic look that most people find very attractive.

  1. Ripped Jeans

This is another trend that is making its way back after decades in the ashes. It was a big trend last year both among men and women and it seems to be getting even bigger this year, if the number of people donning it on the streets of Nairobi is anything to go by. The designs are getting even more brazen by the day and the bigger the rip, the better the look.

  1. Pencil Skirts

For women who have curves in the right places and who are not afraid to show off the curves, the pencil skirts are the in-thing right now, just as they were last year and the year before that. Most women love them for their versatility- you can wear them for a normal day of work at the office and for an evening dinner and still manage to look sexy and classy in both cases.

  1. Accessories

Traditionally, head wraps were reserved for use on those bad hair days when you wanted to look good but did not have time to get your hair right. However, today they are not just being used as a disguise but as a serious fashion statement. The best example here is the Ankara head wrap which has been popping up all over the place.

Sunglasses, especially those ones with large frames, were big last year and they are still big this year although more people seem to prefer embellished sunglasses to the more regular ones. Designer scarves are also big right now and set to get bigger as the year continues.

  1. Floral Prints

Going by the celebrity pictures online and the look on the street, dresses with floral prints are among the most popular weekend outfits for women. Walk into any stadium or rugby game on a sunny weekend and you will see exactly what we mean- the wide array of floral prints in bold colours on the dresses makes for a very beautiful spectacle.

  1. Wristbands

We would have placed these ones under the trending accessories were it not for the fact that they have become so popular that they deserve   special mention on their own. The most popular wrist bands right now are the ones with patriotic colours of the national flag which were initially meant to promote peace and unity but which have grown to become a fashion fad.

Their popularity can be attributed, in large part, to the fact that President Kenyatta always seems to be wearing Kenyan branded wristbands and many of us choose to follow suit.

  1. Natural Hair And The Beard

Lupita may have made natural hair popular but no one knows who brought back the beard. Regardless of the source, the fact that almost every middle aged man in the city wants to done a beard is enough evidence that this is the new trend in town. It started last year and most people thought the fad would fade but it appears not to be going away any time soon.
